Dissertation Title: How to Win My Ex Back: A Qualitative Exploration of Online Forums of

Persistent Unwanted Pursuers of Former Romantic Partners

Dissertation Chair: Dr. Nicole Avena

Brief Synopsis:

Stalking is an epidemic that affects all those involved—in particular, those impacted by ex-intimate stalkers.  Ex-intimate stalkers have been found to be more persistent pursuers and more likely escalate to severe stalking behaviors than other categories of stalkers.  A relationship breakup is often the trigger of the unwanted pursuit of an ex-partner, however little is known about what factors fuel the pursuit in the post-breakup phase.  Using the relational goal pursuit as a theoretical foundation, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experience of unwanted reconciliation pursuer during a stalking campaign to ascertain what factors impacted persistence in the unwanted reconciliation pursuit campaign.
